RockPot vs. a 12V Slow Cooker
Short answer: A 12V cooker is a countertop appliance on a long cord. It draws from your vehicle for the entire cook. The RockPot needs 30 minutes of heat on the RockTablet, then cooks for up to 8 hours with no cord, no battery and no vehicle nearby.
A 12V cooker solves one problem: getting a plug-in cooker into a vehicle. It keeps the plug.
The RockPot removes it. You heat the RockTablet once, set it in the vessel, load your food and latch the lid. From there it cooks on stored heat alone.

Do the battery math
At 8 amps, an 8-hour cook pulls 64 amp-hours from your electrical system. Plan for that: run the engine, or carry a power station sized for it.
The RockPot draws nothing. The energy goes in up front, as 30 minutes of heat, and the stone releases it over the cook.
Where a 12V cooker makes sense
It is inexpensive ($44.99 at listing) and needs no warm-up step. For a solo driver warming a small meal in the cab on a long haul, it does the job.
Where RockPot makes sense
Families and groups. Seven quarts feeds six or more. Trips where the vehicle is parked and off, or where the meal needs to cook on a boat, at a hunting camp or at the trailhead while you are away.
Who should buy which
- Solo drivers heating small portions on the road: a 12V cooker.
- Anyone cooking a full meal for a group away from power: RockPot.
Questions people ask
Will a 12V slow cooker drain my car battery?
It depends on your battery and how long you run it. A cooker drawing 8 amps for 8 hours uses about 64 amp-hours, so plan to run the engine or carry a separate power station.
Does the RockPot need electricity?
You need heat for about 30 minutes to heat the RockTablet, from a stovetop or a fire. After that, it cooks for up to 8 hours with nothing plugged in.
How many people does the RockPot feed?
The 7QT RockPot feeds 6 or more. The 4QT RockPot Mini feeds 1 to 3.
Can I heat the RockTablet on an induction cooktop?
No. Gas, propane, butane, electric coil, glass and ceramic cooktops, campfires and wood stoves all work. Induction does not.
